In the interests of full disclosure, I haven't always been a writer or even had the urge. After completing a degree in Psychology, I was happily cruising a career in community services and raising a family, when I was besieged by a set of characters that took residence in my head. They were exciting but very inconvenient. They were also persistent. So, against my will, I started to write their story.
My first manuscript was terrible. (Really, really awful). That was unfortunate because I wasn't yet cured of the compulsion, and in fact it seemed to have grown worse. I wanted to write, but I hated writing badly. So I began the journey of getting educated and undertook the ten thousand hours everyone needs to have a hope in being good at something.
It's a few years and a few manuscripts later, and now, instead of trying to shoo new characters out of my head, I welcome them in and try my best to translate their stories.
I still work in community services and health, and every day I see both the myriad of complex problems humans face, as well as the myriad gestures of humanity that help us get through. I find our species so flawed yet so remarkable - it's this that feeds my stories.
